The beginning of the 19th century saw the New Zealand fur seal on the brink of extinction due to the arrival of European sealing gangs.

Lucky for them the bottom fell out of the industry and enough were saved for the population to make such a come-back that they are no longer on the list of of endangered species.

Fur seals travel up the coast in the autumn months in search of food and warmer water. They're often spotted lounging on the islands within the Te Whanganui a Hei marine reserve no doubt with ample fish in their bellies.
