3 Rock Pools and Lava Flow 2012

Artist: Michael Smither

3 Rock Pools and Lava Flow 2012

Artists reproduction screenprint of the original Painting.

“Exploring the massive energy of the sea at work on the coast of Taranaki”

The Original painting took Michael Smither a number of years to complete. Smither applied layers of oils that were in parts sanded back to bring up underlying colours.
Sand was incorporated in parts and building of the layers of the painting and then sanding back gave a depth to the painting.

The original painting was one of several works that are a culmination of many years contemplation and earlier attempts.
The site of the study can be visited at very low tides on the seaward side of the lee-breakwater below the Belt Road Motor Camp in New Plymouth.

This screen-print is a reproduction of a painting shown in New Plymouth at a memorial exhibition for the artist's mother, Mary Smither.
