Michael has had a "lifelong interest in Marine Reserves which started in Taranaki, eventually becoming 1st Club Chairman of the Port Taranaki underwater Club in Taranaki, New Plymouth."

Hahei Marine Reserve painting was inspired by memories Michael Smither has as a young man as a diver at Hahei, when he use to holiday and enjoy the discovery of abundance of marine life in the area.

Michael recalls how Gian, companion, and himself often visited a well known local identity Dorothy Waters at Hahei. " Whilst Gian would read to Dorothy, I would take my easel down to Hahei beach front and paint in situ" , and in one of these times capturing Michaels moments of expressions " This painting was painted on a day that l was reminiscing in memories of snorkling at Hahei as a young man and my connection with Hahei and Marine reserves around New Zealand."
