Rachel Olsen

Rachel Olsen paints vibrant and compelling works in her own rich and distinctive style. She enjoys capturing the beauty and character of her chosen subjects, which vary from land and seascapes to portrait and figure studies.
Her work is always uplifting and often depicts New Zealand summers and the beautiful coastline. The ever-changing sea and sky, bush clad hills, character seaside baches and caravans, old dinghies, pohutukawa and birds are among some of her favourite subjects. A good understanding of light, colour and line, combined with a natural ability to draw and compose has given her paintings wide appeal. Rachel's best known works have a unique 'New Zealand' flavour, and evoke a feeling of warm familiarity often reminding us of times and places close to our hearts. They feature in particular the east coast of the Coromandel which has been her home for over 20 years since moving from Auckland in 1989. Having worked with glass earlier in her career, Rachel made the change to painting in 1997 and had her first solo exhibitions in 1999 and 2001. Since then she has exhibited in many group exhibitions and has had work chosen to feature on numerous calendar publications 2000-2013, a Progressive Enterprises promotion for reusable shopping bags featuring NZ Art in 2004, a set of 4 Telecom phone cards in 2006, and an ARC promotion of ‘Bach Escapes’ in Auckland Regional Parks in 2009. Over the last 12 years Rachel has also completed many commission works and her paintings are held in private collections throughout NZ and overseas.
